Tregothnan

Location: Truro, Cornwall

Website: Tregothnan website

Tregothnan is well-known for its botanical collections, as well as being the largest garden in Cornwall. The flora at Tregothnan has been cherished for many centuries. From the 1840s, it became a global hotspot for botanical innovations, and “the most introduced plants anywhere in the world now flourish in Cornwall” according to horticulturalist Philip McMillan Browse. Tregothnan is located on the banks of the deep sea creek that is the river Fal, creating a micro-climate which mimics the high foothills of the Himalayas and which supports many extraordinary species of fruit trees and an enormous range of rare plants.

Tregothnan botanical garden protects many endangered trees, including one of the world’s rarest trees, the Wollemi Pine. Tregothnan is also home to the world’s largest Camellia Maze. In addition, the famous tea gardens are a major attraction at Tregothnan and opportunities will be given to gain experience in this truly unique environment, now Europe’s largest tea plantation.

Tregothnan garden now encompasses both banks of the River Fal, with the woodland garden and river gardens extending to well over 100 acres. Experience may be gained in the River Gardens (currently under development) as well as the original botanical gardens around the house.

A full suite of the latest equipment is available at Tregothnan, including a new range of battery-powered machinery, which charges from the solar array. Full training and supervision will be given as well as certification where appropriate.

Tregothnan has a prestigious history of hosting trainees, many of whom have now gone onto senior roles in horticulture around the world.
