Tom Upton says that the HBGBS opens doors
According to HBGBS trainee Tom Upton, the HBGBS scheme can open doors for a horticulturist.
After completing a law degree and 4 years running his own gardening business, Tom decided that the HBGBS trainee scheme was the perfect way into professional horticulture. He became the 2009/10 HBGBS trainee at Myddleton House.
Tom comments, “It is a useful way for the uninitiated or keen amateur to get into horticulture. With it’s emphasis on practical work, it allows career changers and those without formal qualifications to move into the professional world. The networking opportunities on HBGBS outings are fantastic; and certainly open a few doors!”
After completing his year at Myddleton House, Tom applied for and successfully obtained a place on the 2 year Diploma Course at RHS Gardens, Wisley.
He aims to remain in the amenity sector of horticulture, possibly within an historical context.
